Dated, Timeless and Modern
I’d like to introduce you to the concept that I use to describe clothes, accessories, hairstyles, makeup, etc. There are three terms I use — dated, timeless, and modern. Groundbreaking, right? :) Although this sounds quite self-explanatory I decided to write it down, as I will often refer to these terms in my future posts.
So here they are:
Dated – This refers to items that belong to a certain period of time and are now out of fashion. They may return at some point, but often times something has changed that makes it new and distinct. Unless you are a “vintage queen,” you should avoid wearing clothing or accessories that are dated. They may make you look older, but not in a good way.
Timeless – items are called such because you often can’t tell when a piece of clothing was made or purchased. These items, including clothes, hairstyles, and accessories, are not limited to one period of time.
If you like wearing the same garments for many years, learning how to distinguish timeless items will be helpful to you. Of course, even if your wardrobe is full of timeless apparel, you still need to combine them with more modern items.
Modern – refers to current trends, materials, and silhouettes. Modern items will become dated after a certain period of time. But you shouldn’t be shy to use them. Simply keep an eye on current fashion trends and re-evaluate your wardrobe, accessories, makeup, and haircut every three to five years. If you like change and enjoy wearing new clothes, modern is the concept for you.
Here are some examples:
Salma Hayek’s outfit and hairstyle looked modern during the 90s, but now they look dated. While Penelope Cruz looks timeless – she could go like this throughout 90s, 2000s and 2010s.
Rachel McAdams’ outfit and hairstyle on the left are dated, while on the right she has timeless everything except sunglasses – they are modern.
Ines de la Fressange’s outfit on the left is dated, but timeless on the right. Ines is a perfect example of timeless style. You should definitely look closer at her style if you like the timeless concept!
Gisele Bundchen’s outfit and sunglasses are dated on the left and modern on the right.
Everything in the left picture is dated, while in the right picture shirt, pants and hair are timeless, shoes and bag are modern.
In this picture the lady on the left has timeless hair while the rest is modern. The lady on the right has timeless pants, sweater and hair accompanied with modern accessories.
And the last one – timeless everything on the left and modern jeans on the right.
Does it make sense? Please leave your comment on whether it is easy to understand or if you have any questions.
